A web developer's hourly rate in 2026 runs from about $15 to well over $100, and both ends of that range are honest. Where the developer works, who they work for and how the job is priced explain most of the gap. Below are the published numbers for the US, the UK and Pakistan, where each one comes from, and how to compare two quotes that look nothing alike.
I am a web developer based in Lahore, Pakistan, and I quote fixed prices rather than hourly ones, so I have no reason to talk the hourly numbers up or down. Every figure here links to its source, and where a reliable figure does not exist, I say so.

Web developer hourly rates at a glance
| Figure | What it measures | |
|---|---|---|
| US, employed | $47.85 an hour median | Salaried web developers and digital designers, May 2025 (BLS) |
| UK, contract | £463 a day median | Advertised web developer contract rates, six months to November 2026 (IT Jobs Watch) |
| UK, WordPress contract | £450 a day median | Advertised WordPress developer contract rates, same period |
| Global freelance marketplace | $15 to $50 an hour median | Web developers hired on Upwork |
| Global, WordPress only | $15 to $28 an hour median | WordPress developers hired on Upwork |
| Pakistan | No reliable published figure | See the Pakistan section below |
These are medians and ranges, not price lists. Treat them as the middle of the market, and expect any single quote to sit above or below.
What web developers charge in the US
The cleanest number anywhere comes from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Its Occupational Outlook Handbook puts the median pay for web developers and digital designers at $99,520 a year, or $47.85 an hour, in May 2025. For web developers alone, the median annual wage was $92,650.
That is what an employer pays a salaried developer. A freelancer or a small studio billing the same work charges more per hour, because the rate has to cover the hours nobody pays for: finding clients, quoting, admin, software, holidays and the weeks between projects. Agencies add account managers and profit on top again. So when a US agency quotes $120 an hour, it is not out of line with a $48 salary; it is a different thing being sold.
What web developers charge in the UK
In the UK, contract developers usually quote by the day. IT Jobs Watch reports a median web developer day rate of £463 for the six months to November 2026, and £450 for WordPress developers. On a seven and a half hour working day, that is roughly £60 an hour.
Two cautions. These are rates advertised in contract job listings, not rates actually paid, and contract roles lean towards larger companies. A UK freelancer building a small business website will often quote a fixed project price instead, which is why searches for an hourly rate in the UK turn up such scattered answers.
Freelance web developer and WordPress developer hourly rates
Marketplaces are where most small businesses first compare rates. Upwork's own cost page puts the median hourly rate for web developers at $15 to $50, and breaks it down as $15 to $25 for entry level, $30 to $50 for intermediate and $50 to $200 for expert work. For WordPress developers, the median is $15 to $28 an hour.
One detail changes how you read those numbers. Upwork takes a freelancer service fee of 0% to 15% per contract out of the developer's earnings, so a developer who wants to take home $20 an hour has to charge more than $20. The rate you see already has the platform's cut built in.

What web developers in Pakistan charge
Here is the honest answer: there is no reliable, current, published median hourly rate for web developers in Pakistan. Salary sites carry so few profiles that their ranges are obviously broken, and the freelancer surveys that get quoted are years old and global rather than Pakistani.
What is published is the size of the market. Pakistan's freelancers earned $1.76 billion in the 2025 to 2026 financial year, according to an adviser to the finance minister, as reported by Arab News. Spread across an estimated two and a half to three million freelancers, that is a small amount per person, which tells you most of that work is priced far below the marketplace medians above.
In practice, two markets sit side by side. Experienced Pakistani developers who work for clients abroad price in dollars against the global ranges, because that is who they compete with. Work for local businesses is mostly quoted as a fixed project price in rupees, not by the hour. If that is what you are pricing, my guide to website cost in Pakistan covers the local bands and what moves them.
Why one job gets quoted at $15 and another at $150 an hour
When two quotes for the same website are ten times apart, the hourly rate is rarely the whole story. Look at these instead:
- What is included. Design, copywriting, SEO setup, speed work, training and support after launch are either in the price or billed later.
- How many hours each quote assumes. A cheap rate on a long estimate can cost more than a high rate on a short one.
- Who does the work. At an agency the person you meet is often not the person who builds the site. I explain what that means in freelancer vs agency for web development.
- Experience with your kind of site. A developer who has built twenty stores will not spend paid hours learning how a checkout works.
- Time zone and communication. Overlapping working hours and clear written updates save more time than a lower rate.
Hourly or fixed price: which should you pay?
Pay by the hour when the work is open ended: ongoing changes, maintenance, or a problem nobody can size until someone looks at it. You keep flexibility, and you carry the risk that it takes longer than hoped.
Pay a fixed price when the job can be described up front, as most websites can. You know the number before work starts, and the developer carries the risk of their own estimate. The catch is that a fixed price only protects you if the scope is written down: pages, features, rounds of changes and what happens after launch.
That is why I work on fixed prices. A custom WordPress build or a business website gets a written scope and one number before any work begins, and business websites start at $499. The web design cost guide shows what changes the price for bigger projects.
How to compare two quotes fairly
- Ask each developer for an estimate in hours as well as a total, even on a fixed price.
- Put the inclusions side by side: design, content, SEO, speed, training, support.
- Ask who will build it, and who you will talk to while they do.
- Look at two live sites they built, on your phone, and check how fast they open.
- Ask what a change costs after launch, because that is where hourly work comes back.
A rate is only cheap or expensive next to what it buys. If you have two quotes in front of you and cannot tell which is the better deal, send them over and I will tell you what each one actually covers.
